We love furry family members – let’s be honest, pets (and dog videos) are what got us through lockdown – so their wellbeing is of the utmost importance.
Whether you’re a dog biscuit company, developing a new pet food, or making changes to an existing pet product, you’ll be looking for ingredients that are good for a pet’s diet, health and overall wellbeing.
Raw honey – particularly Manuka honey – is great for cats and dogs in responsible doses, in the same way, it’s good for humans:
- High in antioxidants
- Antifungal properties
- Antibacterial properties
- Antimicrobials and natural enzymes
- Tastes delicious
All the benefits honey offers are also found in honey powder. When it comes to pets, the listed properties make it an ingredient that helps:
- Repair or heal a pet’s small wounds
- Protect their skin – moisturising, as well as improving and reducing skin irritations
- Improve gut problems, diarrhoea, and overall gut health
- Combat scratchy throats, coughs and other viral infections
- Fight certain allergies
- Improve oral health and “dog breath” (but be wary of the amount of sugar!)
Manuka honey has been found to contain the most antimicrobial properties, which is why it’s such a popular health product (for both humans and pets). It’s used in a range of veterinary medicine, such as:
- Skin oils, creams and treatments
- Wound gel
Our Manuka honey powder in particular is a great pet food ingredient for biscuits or treats, as it adds flavour while being jammed-packed full of health benefits. It’s also commonly used to disguise pet’s tablets or medicine – pet’s love the sweet flavour of honey powder and gobble it up, while it masks the medicinal taste.
Be aware that honey powder contains natural sugars, so should only be used in moderation and is best for pets older than a year rather than puppies. Recommended daily doses are half a teaspoon for cats and smaller dogs, up to a tablespoon for larger dogs – consult a veterinarian for specific quantities.
